Maia's Whimsical Adventures

Maia’s Whimsical Adventures is a self-published series of children’s picture books for 3 - 6 year olds. Currently, there are four books published (with more on the way). Photography is used to illustrate the fun rhyming stories for each picture book that include a photographic listing naming insects, bugs, animals, and wildlife along with the page number it is located on. Children, parents, and educators will adore the unique, funny, and artful picture books.

Individual Personae

Individual Personae is a photography collection that captures the quiet individuality and shared humanity of people navigating public spaces. Shot over a year at the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch, this project explores fleeting, authentic moments through hazy, motion-blurred full-body portraits. Each image obscures facial details while preserving personality and essence, creating a dreamlike reflection of the diversity that defines our collective experience.

Unaltered State of Reality

All of the photographs in this Collection were created in-camera during a three-year photographic study of a public museum environment. The Unaltered State of Reality Collection is a very large body of several thousand photographs which are grouped into five Sub-Collections: Copper Visions, Fractured Panes, Reflections, Textured Visions and Translucent Visions.

Over a three year period Holden made 163 weekly visits to create photographic artwork from the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California with the intention of creating art from a museum space, rather than visiting the museum to view the artwork of others. He set out to make images that provide a history of visitor interaction, the museum’s architectural design, and to document its dynamic and static public environment.

After the project was completed, the museum invited Holden to participate in their Artist in Residency Program with the photographs being exhibited.

Natural Surroundings

Natural Surroundings records nature on the boundary of the urban environment. The scenes are not remote, rather they exist on the fringe of urbanization along the roadside, in protected parks, or within city limits. For me, knowing the locations are nearby, the images form a psychological bridge with the distant pristine natural environment.

Liquid Flowers

In my first extensive photographic body of work, Liquid Flowers, I wanted to study an element of beauty in our everyday lives which is both tangible and universal to all of humanity, and thus, flowers became the subject of deep interest. Moreover, humanity conveys emotional feelings through floral communication such as, love, loss, appreciation, beauty, and more. These photographs evoke a timelessness of delicate liquid motion captured from travels throughout the world with a unique stylization of the flower.

People Around Us

People Around Us conceptualizes our place in crowds as we navigate our way from one location to another. The people around us are often abstract objects to move around, between, or follow as we journey to a destination. Distracted by our thoughts, mobile devices, and environment, little attention is given to who the people are that surround us. Yet, at times, an "impression" can linger in our memory of some unknown individual we've casually seen, or bumped into, that forms a lasting remembrance. The photographs in this collection are composite images from the Individual Personae Collection of people in motion from a public space representing the crowds we flow through on our journey throughout our daily lives.

Sunlight

The Sunlight Collection are in-camera photographs inspired by the source of our planetary light, the sun, whether direct, reflected, or diffused. According to science, it takes some 10,000 to 100,000+ years for a photon of light created at the center of our sun, plus 8 minutes of travel time to reach the earth, for photographers to use that light to capture images. These photographs record the poetry, drama, and ethereal beauty of sunlight across the spectrum of sunrise to sunset.
