N A T U R E

The approach to photographing nature is drawn from a cinematographic viewpoint where light establishes emotion and composition creates motion.  Light chisels the landscape view with the softness of a baby’s breath, or the drilling of a jackhammer, contouring dimensional reliefs.  When I witness light falling upon a scene in a certain way I attempt to capture the color palette at play along with compositional constraints to mentally process possibilities in an attempt to extract an inner feeling about the scene.  Light and composition drive conceptualization to discover nature’s poetic beauty, chiseled ruggedness, pristine environment, or her temper tantrums.

For me, the images in this group continue an underlying theme rooted in traditional art where photography mimics fine art painting through technical mastery of the photographic medium.  I use small 35mm format cameras as a means to express the existential moment in time where I “see” in a brief instant a fleeting scene to capture, as opposed to waiting to capture nature’s expressions through an elaborate camera set-up approach and simply waiting for the “right” instant to release the shutter.  This approach to the subject matter heightens my sensory perceptions as I roam the planet that in turn, makes me an active participant as nature unfolds with each dawning day.  The imagery is a reflection of this state of mind as I view the world around me.
